A position will shortly be available (currently undergoing final sign-off
by Human Resources) for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the project "A
self-correcting knowledge base for large-scale knowledge engineering"
hosted by the Computer Science Department, University of Waikato, Hamilton,
New Zealand. The Department is a vibrant research environment with
particular strengths in machine learning and data mining (evidenced in its
Weka software), information retrieval, natural language processing, and
digital libraries (evidenced in its Greenstone digital library-building

The project, which has just won a significant grant from New Zealand's
Marsden Fund, seeks to bring ideas from philosophy of science to bear on
the problem of formal ontology integration. Led by Dr Catherine Legg and
Professor Ian Witten, it draws on their previous published research on
semantic disambiguation, ontology mapping and automated knowledge transfer.
It aims to build a knowledge base that can test its own input from
independent sources, and learn automatically from the many user-supplied
knowledge repositories now proliferating on the Web.

We are looking for someone with a PhD in Computer Science with excellent
Java programming skills and hands-on experience in large-scale knowledge
integration. Experience with ontologies, semantic web technologies, and in
particular resources such as Wikipedia, DBPedia, Freebase and OpenCyc,
would be a real plus. Knowledge of formal logic and / or philosophy is also
highly desirable.

The position is expected to have a small teaching component (approximately
half a course a year), which will be negotiated with the successful
