Make a difference

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence (in foundation) at University of Stuttgart (Germany) performs research in AI from formal knowledge representation to machine learning. It is our mission to make a difference by progressing from basic research up to demonstrating value added of our research result to industry and society.
We invite applications for

2 researcher positions (100% TV-L E 13) who will research Knowledge Representation and Reasoning / Semantic Technologies

Positions are suitable for PostDocs or PhD students
Your research will involve knowledge representation for semantic technologies that support the collaboration of architects and engineers. Techniques for querying and reasoning at varying levels of abstraction and the application of foundational knowledge (e.g. belief revision) to semantic web technologies (e.g. SPARQL, SHACL, OWL) lie in the focus of our research.

The two positions are funded by DFG through the excellence cluster "Integrative Computational Design and Construction" (https://www.intcdc.uni-stuttgart.de <https://www.intcdc.uni-stuttgart.de/>) and the DFG priority program „Intentional Forgetting in Organizations“ (http://www.spp1921.de/ <http://www.spp1921.de/>) and are initially limited to three and two years, respectively.

What We Will Offer

We provide you with a friendly, but challenging interdisciplinary research environment and support your academic career - including accomplishment of your Ph.D. (if applicable).

What You Will Contribute

You will perform basic research that matters to advancing the versatile management and usage of knowledge graphs, including distributed management of knowledge graph facts and ontologies as well as including the forgetting of knowledge and data for knowledge graph evolution. You contribute to understanding belief revision at the assertional and terminological level of knowledge graphs (SPARQL Updates) and how data transformation impacts on schema level constraints (SHACL). Your expertise in argumentation logics may constitute a foundation for explaining changes in knowledge graphs. You will advise and tutor bachelor and master students in the computer and data science programs of the department in topics related to your research.

Eligibility

Applicants for the position are required to have an MSc in computer science or in a related field. You should possess knowledge in logics and/or ontologies and/or formal artificial intelligence. First experience with KR methods like semantic web technologies, logical knowledge representation methods, belief revision or logical argumentation are expected for the position. Good social and communication skills are a must. PostDoc applicants must have demonstrated their capabilities for writing excellent publications.

Salary

The salary amounts to German TV-L E 13, which starts at approx. 50,000 Euro income per year (before taxation).
