15 four-years grants are offered by the Faculty of Computer Science of
the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Italy for its PhD programme.
Each grant amounts to 68,000 euro (i.e., 17,000 euro per year); for
research visits abroad the grant increases up to 50%.  Substantial extra
funding (including a personal budget of 2,500 euro per year) is
available for participation to international conferences, schools,
workshops, research visits.  3 of the 15 PhD grants are supported by FBK
Trento and 2 by software companies, and interested candidates might
carry out their PhD research in collaboration with these external
partners.  The language of the PhD programme is English.

The deadline for applications is the 8th of July, 2019.

Bolzano is located in one of the most fascinating European regions, the
Dolomites. The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is a young university
that has already established itself as an important research
institution, both in Italy and abroad. According to the Times Higher
Education World University Rankings 2019, the university is the 9th
world's best small university, and its Faculty of Computer Science is
ranked among the 150 best CS departments worldwide (in absolute terms)
and it is the 21st best Computer Science department worldwide for
scientific citations.

The KRDB Research Centre for Knowledge and Data <krdb.eu> of the Faculty
of Computer Science is widely recognised as one of the internationally
leading groups in Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Representation
research, with a synergy between foundational and application-oriented
research. Among the various available PhD topics described in the call,
the In2Data Research Group is looking for PhD students interested in
foundational and applied research on data management and integration.
Specific topics of interest are:

- Virtual knowledge graphs
- Artificial Intelligence techniques for data management and integration
- Reasoning over integrated models of processes, decisions, and data
- Data preparation for process mining
- Data provenance and explainable inference over data and knowledge
- Data compliance and GDPR

We have recently founded a spin-off that develops technologies for
virtual knowledge graphs, and candidates interested in applied and
industry-oriented research have the opportunity to collaborate.
