DEFINITION AND SCOPE

Formal ontology for information systems is now a research focus in such diverse domains as conceptual modeling, database design, software engineering, artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, the life sciences, bioinformatics, geographic information science, knowledge engineering, information retrieval, and the semantic web. Researchers in all these areas increasingly recognize the need for serious engagement with ontology to provide a foundation for their work, where ontology is understood as a general theory of the types of entities and relations making up domains of enquiry.

The FOIS conference provides a meeting point for researchers from all disciplines with an interest in formal ontology. The conference encourages submission of high quality articles on both theoretical issues and concrete applications. As in previous years, FOIS 2016 is intended as a nexus of interdisciplinary research and communication. It is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications (IAOA, http://iaoa.org/), which is a non-profit organization promoting interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science, as well as in the applications of ontological analysis to conceptual modeling, knowledge engineering, knowledge management, information-systems development, library and information science, scientific research, and semantic technologies in general.

SATELLITE ACTIVITIES

Following the success of the 2014 edition, FOIS 2016 will include, in addition to paper presentations,
+ workshops
+ a formal ontology competition
+ an early career symposium (ECS). 

FOIS 2016 will be directly preceded by the 3rd Interdisciplinary Summer School on Ontological Analysis. It will moreover be co-located with ICCS 2016 (International Conference on Conceptual Structures), to be held July 4-6.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

We seek high-quality papers on a wide range of topics. Concerning scope, an ideal FOIS paper will address both content-related ontological issues and their formal modeling, as well as their impact and relevance for some aspects of information systems. Areas of particular interest to the conference include the following:

Foundational Issues
* Kinds of entities: particulars/universals, continuants/occurrents, abstracta/concreta, dependent entities/independent entities, natural objects/artifacts
* Formal relations: parthood, identity, connection, dependence, constitution, causality, subsumption, instantiation
* Vagueness and granularity

* Role of reference ontologies
* Top-level vs. domain-specific ontologies
* Relationship with cognition, language and semantics

* Ontology of biological reality (genes, proteins, cells, organisms, etc.)

* Ontology of social reality (institutions, organizations, norms, social relationships, artistic expressions, languages, etc.)
* Ontology of perception (human and artificial)

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Submitted papers must not exceed 14 pages (including the bibliography) and include an abstract of no more than 300 words. Papers should be submitted non-anonymously and be prepared in PDF format in accordance with the IOS formatting guidelines found at http://www.iospress.nl/service/authors/latex-and-word-tools-for-book-authors/.

As with previous FOIS conferences, the proceedings will be published by IOS Press, this year in electronic format with permanent open access (!).

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS

Workshops at FOIS are events whose scientific program is independently established by the workshop organizers. The workshop organizers will be responsible for advertising the workshop and reviewing and selecting the contributions. Workshops can be events that provide a forum for the discussion of topics that may complement the main conference or focus on specialized sub-topics related to formal ontology and its application in information systems. We especially invite proposals for workshops organized by IAOA Special Interest Groups and Technical Committees.

Workshop proposals should be no more than two pages in length and must contain the following information:
- title of the workshop and names of organizers
- description of the workshop topic and format
- brief description of experience in workshop organization
- brief statement on the relation and relevance of the workshop to FOIS
- intended duration of the workshop (half-day, full-day)
- plans for publishing workshop proceedings.

FOIS Workshop Proposals should be submitted as soon as possible and no later than January 15, 2016. Decisions on acceptance will be made by January 25.

CALL FOR EARLY CAREER SYMPOSIUM

This event is designed to provide an opportunity for graduate students to present their work at one of the leading conferences in formal ontology and to get first-hand feedback and mentorship from senior researchers in their field. It will also allow participants to network with other early career scientists in the broad field of ontology. Topics of interest include all topics relevant to the interdisciplinary field of ontology as outlined in the topics of interest for FOIS 2016.

The ECS will be held as a poster session within the main FOIS conference. The poster session will be opened by a lightning talks session, during which each participant has the opportunity to advertise his/her work in a 3 minutes speech to the general audience of the FOIS conference. Each participant will be assigned a senior researcher as a mentor, who will provide substantial feedback to his/her work. Moreover, a PhD Lounge will allow early career scientists to meet and discuss their work with each other. 

The ECS is open to students at the Masters and Doctoral Level who have not defended their thesis before the ECS Submission deadline. 

Candidates can apply by submitting a 2-page description of their research project (see the template at http://nemo.inf.ufes.br/fois16-ecs/ECS_submission_template.zip) and a current CV by February 26, 2016. Submissions will be reviewed by selected members of the FOIS Program Committee. Submission should be made via https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=fois2016 (select the track 'Early Career Symposium'). Accepted submissions will be published in a symposium booklet (PDF).
