Qualitative Spatio-Temporal Representation and Reasoning:
Trends and Future Directions

A book edited by Dr. Shyamanta M. Hazarika, Tezpur University, India

Introduction
Knowledge Representation and Reasoning is fast becoming an area of
increased focus within Computer Science research. While encoding
knowledge, one needs to appreciate that everyday spatial reasoning is
driven through qualitative abstractions rather than complete quantitative
knowledge a priori. This has led to the emerging discipline of Qualitative
Spatial Information Theory within Artificial Intelligence.
Space and time are inextricably linked. Reasoning about space often
involves reasoning about change in spatial configurations. Qualitative
Spatial Information Theory encompasses spatial as well as temporal
representation and reasoning. Qualitative spatio-temporal representation
and reasoning in general and formalizing spatial change in particular is
increasing becoming a core issue within Mobile Computing, GIS / Spatial
Information Systems, Databases, Computer Vision as well as Knowledge
Discovery and Data Mining. The present book will give an overview of
current research in Qualitative Spatio-Temporal Representation and
Reasoning.

Objective of the Book
This book is a contribution to the emerging discipline of Qualitative
Spatial Information Theory within Artificial Intelligence. The edited
volume envisages covering both theory and application-centric research in
the area of qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning. The chapters of
our book will provide a comprehensive perspective on the emerging area of
qualitative spatio-temporal representation and reasoning.

Target Audience
The intended audiences are researchers, scientists, professionals and
experts who are working or intend to work in the field of qualitative
spatio-temporal reasoning and representation. The book will be of great
scholarly value to students and professionals both from academia and
industry particularly for people working in the areas of GIS/ Spatial
Information Systems, Spatio-temporal Databases, Data Mining, Computer
Vision and Robotics

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Formal modeling of space, time and change
2. Qualitative spatial modeling and reasoning
3. Integrated spatial and spatio-temporal reasoning
4. Represent and reason about dynamic spatial systems
5. Integrated ontologies for spatial scene descriptions
6. Notions of spatio-temporal continuity
7. Spatio-temporal Patterns
8. Use of qualitative space-time methods
9. Reasoning with qualified spatio-temporal data
10.Applications of Qualitative Spatio-temporal Calculi

Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before April 15,
2009, a 1-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and
concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals
will be notified by April 30, 2009 about the status of their proposals and
chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by May 30,
2009. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review
basis. Chapter acceptance notification would be sent by August 15, 2009.
Final chapters are expected to be submitted by September 15, 2009.

This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group
Inc.), publisher of the “Information Science Reference” (formerly Idea
Group Reference) and “Medical Information Science Reference” imprints. For
additional information regarding the publisher, please visit
www.igi-global.com. This publication is anticipated to be released in
early 2010.
